The first edition of the Ultra Spice Race, organized by Inspire India Ultra Races was flagged off on the 26th of January 2017 from Bogmalo Beach, Goa. It’s an unique non-stop race with 3 different categories of 500 KM & 1000 KM (to be completed in 56 hours) & 1750 KM (to be completed in 120 hrs), that may be solo solo or as a relay team and is also a RAAM(Race Across America) qualifier. The 1st edition had only 2 racers; Major Bharat, who successfully attempted the 1000Km race and completed it with a nail-biting finish of 55 hours 39 minutes and Sumit Patil who attempted the 1750 KM route.
The route is tough yet beautiful and passes through a variety of landscapes; From Coast to forests to spice and coffee plantations and hills covered with Eucalyptus covering some very serene places, and some tourist hotbeds like Wayanad & Ooty. The 1000 KM race gains about 9500 Mts in elevation and approximately 21200 Mts for the 1750km route
Though there were only 2 racers and 1 finisher the organizers are hopeful that just like Deccan Cliffhanger, which had a humble beginnings but transformed into a premier event, even the Ultra Spice race will become big in future.
