The city of Nizams that was once the buzzing epicenter of culture and cuisine is now a thriving new age IT city. And with the new age, came to town the new trends, cycling being one of them. As riding a bicycle is a great way to traverse the contrast of the twin cities of Hyderabad & Secunderabad. A 30 km ride is all you need to go from the Charminar at the epi center of the old city with its numerous Irani Cafes to Hi-Tech city with more modern buildings and architecture. ‘The Bike Affair’is a popular Bike Shop chain in the city and is also a riding club with a huge list of riders from various walks of life.

They have some very interesting signature rides, with some themes associated with the rides whether it is to ride to a scenic place around lakes, going to some historical places like the Charminar or Golconda Forts or a ride culminating at a new place for breakfast. The regulars can bring their friends or family members to try out cycling for which rental bikes are also available at the store.

While Saturdays are leisure days and are the best time for a new rider to join in. These are short 30 – 45 km rides at a casual pace. Sundays are faster, more intense rides (and often clubbed with some serious breakfast options). The distances are between 60 -120 km. Sankarpally, Chilkur, Chevella and Anantapur are some of the popular destinations these rides are headed to. The roads are mostly State Highways with reasonable tree cover and much lesser or almost nil vehicular traffic.

The club is also exploring new avenues to introduce cycling as a way of cross training. This summer in association with the Hyderabad Runners group a 50 km ride is being organized on Saturdays to give a cross training options to the runners. There are many runners who are good cyclists and the group has quite a few Super Randonneurs amongst them.

Tuesday mornings the road bikers get together to do a training ride doing hill repeats or more of the steady long efforts. With summer coming in the night rides will also start on Tuesday nights.

There are also some special rides which happen occasionally like MTB trail rides, weekend rides to Srisailam etc. The store also conducts a few long rides of varying durations through the year including a week long ride in some beautiful locales in December. The next long ride is a Climbing Bootcamp at Ooty from April 27 to May 1 for which registrations are open.

The store is also dedicated to riding for Social causes. They did a Surprise Santa ride a couple of years ago where in the riders pooled in money to buy christmas gifts for children, dressed as Santas and rode to the regional Cancer Hospital Childrens wing and gave away gifts, Cut a cake and played with the kids.

So if you are in the city and are looking to get started with cycling, or looking for serious riding company, do get in touch with them at guys at the bike affair.
